It’s been a while since I’ve been blogging on here. In fact, it’s been so long that I have yet to give my thoughts on the 2019 Australian Open AND Anthony Davis’ desire to be traded from the New Orleans Pelicans.
At least the Davis rant has to wait because of a blockbuster traded involving my beloved New York Knicks.
According to Marc Stein of The New York Times, the Knicks are trading Porzingis along with guards Tim Hardaway Jr. and Courtney Lee in exchange for Dennis Smith Jr., DeAndre Jordan, and Wesley Matthews. Not exactly tomato cans, to be sure. Plus, this trade gives my Knicks cap space because Jordan and Matthews are in their last deals of their contracts.
While my love of Porzingis had been off and on from the jump, I came to appreciate the skills he brought to the table.
He is a 7-footer who was great with his footwork, has a damn good outside shot and a great post game. He can also hit free throws. But damn, the dude was hurt too often for my liking.
And it didn’t take Porzingis long to see why we Knicks fans are so long-suffering. He grew tired of the organization’s (re: owner James Dolan) act, too. Given that he will be a restricted free agent this summer, he wanted out. Can’t really blame him for that.
While I’m happy that we will have more salary cap room to go after superstars this summer, I’m sad that we had to lose a potentially great player. My Knicks had the closest thing to a unicorn: a 7-footer who could run the floor, shoot, play defense and hit free throws.
I mean, what message does this send to other stars in the NBA? A cornerstone franchise in this country’s biggest media market can’t get it right.
If only Dolan could sell the team (we can all dream, right?)…
