Jeff Saturday Hiring by the Colts Is a Smack in the Face of Black Coaches

Before I proceed, let me state the following: this is not an attack against Jeff Saturday.

In fact, I’m a big fan of his.

I’m a fan of what he does on TV, particular the shows on ESPN. He appears very personable, and from what I’ve heard he’s just an overall good dude.

My beef is centered on the NFL hiring process that is nothing more than a slap in the face of black coaches. I mean, the hypocrisy is overwhelming as f@&$!

These same owners would always tell black coaches that they had to have extensive coaching experience. In fact, it would look a whole lot better if those same black coaches were coordinators — preferably offensive coordinators.

Meanwhile, Saturday has not been a coach beyond the high school level. What brotha do you know could just roll out of bed, leave the production set of a TV show, and suddenly become a head coach of an NFL squad?

Just utterly ridiculous.

Why even have a Rooney Rule at this point? The rule is toothless as it is. It’s not punitive to teams who continue to skirt the rule and put on sham interviews for black candidates.

As a result, these majority white owners are gonna keep hiring dudes who look like them, talk like them, and hang in similar circles.

By the way, there are only five black head coaches left, including an interim head coach in Carolina. FIVE!!!

Look, I am not even looking for Saturday to fail. I really hope he does well. But the same NFL I grew up loving is constantly moving the goalposts for perspective black coaching candidates is beyond exhausting.

Oh, and I’d Saturday’s hiring I not an example of white privilege, I don’t know what the hell is…
