So lemme get this straight.
Not even 24 hours after the Board of Trustees at the University of Maryland said it was best to bring back head football coach D.J. Durkin despite him being responsible for the death of 19-year-old Jordan McNair, the school fired his ass yesterday.
Durkin was a man who led a toxic culture which included included the following:
- A player holding a meal while in a meeting had the meal slapped out of his hands in front of the team.
- Small weights and other objects were thrown in the direction of players when Rick Court, the strength and conditioning coach who was Durkin’s first hire (and close friend) was angry.
- The belittling, humiliation and embarrassment of players.
- Verbal abuse of players, including instances when they were called “pussies” and homophobic slurs.
Again, this was a dude that Maryland initially wanted to bring back.
All because they didn’t want to pay his $5 million buyout. Well isn’t that noble of the school.
Look, I’ll give SOME props to outgoing President Wallace Loh for defying the Board and firing Durkin’s ass. But I didn’t consider it too heroic because Loh will be retiring next June, so it’s not like he would be a TRUE martyr.
Maryland athletics has been a craphole for a long time, even more so since leaving the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2014. Between the shitty jerseys and this situation, the Terrapins have officially reached laughing stock status.
“Fear the Turtle” my ass…
