I know what a lot of y’all are thinking. Did your ass see how much the Los Angeles Lakers gave up to acquire Anthony Davis?
Yes, I know gave up Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart, and THREE 1st round draft picks. And yes, I know the LeBron James and the Lakers are devoid of their depth and mortgaged their long-term future for one dude, albeit a burgeoning superstar.
But y’all have to remember, the NBA — and pro sports in general — is a “win now” business.
Take a look what happened in Toronto. Yeah, the Raptors are the world champs, but they risk losing Kawhi Leonard, who they traded for last offseason knowing fully that Toronto was nowhere on Leonard’s list of desired destinations.
And keep in mind that LeBron is by no means a spring chicken. Dude will be entering his 17th season, and he wants to win another NBA championship before he calls it a career. Adding Davis would greatly accelerate that process.
Besides, look at what is going on in Golden State. Kevin Durant will likely sign with another team (most likely my New York Knicks), and Klay Thompson will miss at least 3/4 of the 2019-2020 season (as will Durant). That means that the Western Conference will be wide. Ass. Open.
Who knows who will come out of the Eastern Conference? So if you’re the Lakers, you have to strike while the iron is hot by any means necessary.
So fret not, Laker fans. Y’all’s ship is about to come in — perhaps sooner than you think…
