Expanding the NCAA Tournament Field Is a HUGE MISTAKE

The NCAA has got to stop.

The idea of expanding an already bloated field of NCAA tournament teams is stupid at best. Sixty-eight teams is already too many. Seventy-six teams?! Seriously???

We all know the biggest reason behind the move is money, even if it’s going to be a modest increase. More money is just that — MORE MONEY.

And yes, it helps with job security for the head coaches as well. Most schools consider an NCAA tournament appearance a huge success for their basketball programs, no matter how far they advance.

Let’s also be sure about something: this expansion will NOT help the mid-major conferences. It’s going to help the 17-16 Auburns, 18-16 Oklahomas, 20-13 Stanfords, 19-13 Virginia Techs, 18-14 Indianas and 18-14 West Virginias of the world.

In other words, it’s going to water down the NCAA tournament as we know it. And fans should outright revolt over that notion.

Finally, this is only going to diminish the regular season even more (if that hasn’t already happened).

What’s the point of paying attention to regular season games played before the new year? Why tune into conference tournaments? Why tune in to “bubble watch” if everyone and their mamas could qualify for the tournament?

This idea sucks. As I said earlier, the NCAA has got to stop!
