Something Is Up with Manti Te’o

NotreDame_Logo3By now we all have heard the mother of all hoaxes.

That story about Manti Te’o’s girlfriend dying, which he said inspired him to play better as he helped the Fighting Irish get to the BCS National Championship, turned out to be a hoax.  Deadspin.com (God bless Deadspin) reported it could find no record of Lennay Kekua existing.

There are questions about whether the hoax was perpetuated against Te’o or Te’o was part of the hoax himself.  And this is where it gets crazy.

USA Today published a story of what may be the craziest things about this hoax.  Several members of the sports media, including sports talk show hosts, have their own theories as to why this took place.

I have been asking myself the question: why in the hell would a young man who has a lot going for himself would allow himself to be embroiled in this hoax?

Te’o is the best player on a team that played for the national championship.  He is the “big man” on campus, a certified chick magnet.  He is going to be one of the first players picked in April’s NFL Draft.

Te’o claimed to have met her over Twitter after he said that he met her in person at a Stanford game (there is no record of her being a student at Stanford) and talked to her over the phone.  The Te’o family never met Kekua, though Te’o’s father had exchanged text messages with someone going by that name (very weird).

And even if he was set up by a loser with a parody Twitter account (which there are now several of), shouldn’t Te’o be savvy enough in social media (like many young people who are around his age) so he could avoid such a high-profiled embarrassment?

That is why I think Te’o made this whole thing up.  I think he made it up to draw more attention to himself, and to perhaps drive his Heisman campaign.

* Sidebar: what if Te’o DID win the Heisman as I thought he should?  Could you say “scandalous”?

Here’s another question for all of us to chew on: why in the hell would he do this?  As I said earlier, he seemingly have a lot going for himself.

I’ve heard several theories, ranging from an insane desire to be noticed to perhaps Te’o covering his sexual orientation.  Who the hell knows at this point?  All I have to say is this is one salacious, juicy-ass story that is NOWHERE near being complete.

Stay tuned…
