Lots to Like about the Gottfried Hire at NC State

I must admit when I first heard that NC State athletics director Debbie Yow hired Mike Gottfried to coach my beloved Wolfpack basketball team, one word came to mind.

“Who?”

Here we go with another so-so hire, I thought.  My alma mater could ill afford to screw up another coaching hire, especially after word came out that Shaka Smart (and Arizona coach Sean Miller) rejected our overtures to decide to remain at VCU.

Then when I took the time to “Wikipedia” Gottfried, I took note of the following:

  • His overall coaching record is 277–152.
  • He was the former coach of Alabama from 1998-2009.
  • He won the SEC in 2002.
  • He was the SEC coach of the year in the same season.
  • He led Alabama to its first #1 ranking in 2002.

Quite an impressive track record, isn’t it?

Besides, at this stage of the game, who the hell else were we going to find to coach NC State?

I think we will be in good hands with Gottfried.  After all, he led a non-basketball school like Alabama to multiple NCAA tournaments — not to mention a #1 ranking.  There is reason to believe he could do the same (if not more) at a school steeped in college basketball tradition.  NC State has more resources to help Gottfried be successful.

As long as Yow stays out of Gottfried’s way and lets him do his job…
