I have always said that if a college basketball team finishes its regular season undefeated, they should be in the NCAA tournament — no matter what conference it comes from.
At 31-0, Miami of Ohio is a damn tournament team. Period, end of discussion.
I don’t care if the RedHawks play in the MAC or in the Happy Hill Conference, put that ass in the tournament. All of this fake outrage is ridiculous.
However, I do understand the pushback from TNT Sports’ Bruce Pearl and others on certain things.
In the NET rankings, where the NCAA uses to select teams for the tournament, the RedHawks are ranked only 53rd. For context, teams in the top 40 are generally viewed as “safe”.
(Hell, they are not even the highest ranked team in their own conference. That would be Kent State at #52.)
Miami also has ZERO Quad One wins, and teams need to have at least 3-4 of those to even matter in the selection committee’s eyes.
And if that doesn’t cast any doubt, here are the rankings for the RedHawks’ strength of schedule and out of conference schedule: 303rd and 363rd, respectively. That’s out of 365 Division 1 teams, folks!
All of that said, I STILL think Miami is an NCAA tournament team. The RedHawks better not lose in their conference tournament, though…
