Talk about a helluva way to kick off Black History Month. Several openings for NFL head coaching spots, none going to black candidates.
(At least Robert Salah got another opportunity as a minority [Muslim dude], right?)
What’s puzzling to me is this: black dudes make up the majority of players in the NFL. They have the most experience in terms of spending time in locker rooms, learning the game, being leaders of men and perfecting their craft.
Some of them become stars who show they are more than good enough to help teams win games and championships.
Yet they are not good enough for a head coaching opportunity? Hell, even an executive?
Matt Ryan went from an MVP to VP of football for the Atlanta Falcons, so it’s not like it can’t be done for former black players — as the case with Jason Wright, former president of the Washington Commanders.
It’s also frustrated to see a lot of black coaches get short leashes. Raheem Morris only had TWO seasons as the Falcons’ head coach, finishing 8-9 both seasons. And he was fired for… KEVIN STEFANSKI?????
Some black coaches get put in crappy situations. You think Aaron Glenn is cursing the moment he took the Jets’ job?
So the obvious question is this: how in the hell do we change this?
The mostly argued solution is to have more minority ownership in the NFL.
People tend to hire who they have more in common with, so it’s no surprise to see these white owners hire young, up and coming white head coaches. Some of those hire were actually good, while I’m still scratching my head at Declan Doyle.
Maybe teams with black owners would be more open to giving deserving black head coaches the benefit of the doubt? Who knows?
But given that we do not have black ownership, and it’s VERY hard to buy yourself into the NFL owners’ club, the next alternative is to talk about the talented crop of black position coaches and maybe speak their candidacy in existence.
Here are a few names to keep an eye on:
J.T. Barrett: Chicago Bears QB coach
Antwan Randle-El: Bears WR coach
Nate Scheelhaase: LA Rams offensive coordinator
Jerrod Johnson: Houston Texans QB coach
Tee Martin: Baltimore Ravens QB coach
